Lock functionality is performed by accountants in month and year end process. Once the period is locked no transaction can be created or edited in the locked period.
There could be scenarios where yearend closing team needs to post some adjustments in the locked period. In this case NetSuite has provided a permission "Override Period Restrictions" which should be given to the closing team role.
